Happy New Year!!

image via TheGraphicsFairy

Embrace whimsy. Laugh more. Score big at the thrifts. Spend time outdoors. Dress up more. Do random art projects without worrying how they will come out. Go ahead and do the things you want to do, even if the circumstances aren't perfect. Tell someone how much you appreciate them. Give extra love to your pets. Above all, be gentle on yourselves---its all hard enough as it is, and you must be your own best cheerleader.

Bonne Annee, dear blog friends, and best of luck in 2014!

Christmas Tree Hair

I was having some fun on Pinterest searching "Christmas Tree Hair", and thought I'd share some of the ones I found. All images are from my Pinterest board "Wild Headdresses" and the sources for these images can be found there. See my "follow me on Pinterest" button in the right column for a link. Happy Holidays and cheers to wild hairstyles!

Doilies and Sticks

My friend said yesterday "Boy, things hanging off of sticks sure are popular these days!" It cracked me up, but its also very true. And I have to say it---things hanging off of sticks were popular decor in the 70s as well (and I know that because I was a kid in the 70s). I decided to tap that rustic retro vibe and hang some stuff off of sticks in my own home. Above you see a nice smooth piece of driftwood I found and three vintage ornaments I recently thrifted. At first glance they look like doilies---turns out they are clever knotwork:
I hung the whole thing on some vintage crochet trim.

I used the same trim to string another batch of thrift store doilies for a homespun garland:

I also took some pine boughs and a stick I cut from a tree in my yard and propped them in the corner. I hung some ornaments off of the stick---a mushroom, gnome and squirrel, all gifted to me by my mother-in-law. She knows me so well!

Even Tiger Baby got in on the decorating:

Doily cat coat! New in cat fashion, dontcha know :)

Mr. Scampers Interrupts a Photo Shoot

In this post I talked about how my other cat, Tiger Baby, likes to eat tinsel. The cat you see above, Mr Scampers, is less an eater of things than a hell-on-paws, "into everything" explorer. Having him around when I'm trying to take pictures is almost impossible! But, he is entertaining, nonetheless. As you can see, when I was trying to photograph this vintage Santa cookie jar:

Shoe Shine---Mary Janes and Mushroom Socks

Time for another Shoe Shine over at The Citizen Rosebud! I was going to do a post about snow boots or rain boots since our weather has been a slushy mess, but Bella inspired me to bust out RED shoes :) So here are my red mary janes coupled with a pair of mushroom print socks. The basket with the plaid bow is a vintage Caro-Nan purse that I thrifted about a week ago. These purses appear to have been made in the 50s-60s, and were a cottage industry started by two women (Carolyn McDaniel and Nancy Steele)  in Jackson, Mississippi. Each purse was handmade, at first by the two women themselves, and then by a small group of other women they hired.

I'm also wearing a green tweed 70s Pendleton maxi skirt that I snagged for .99 at Value Village (during one of their 99cent sales---great bargains, but very trying shopping experience---crowded, rude patrons, etc). Under that I am wearing a vintage nightgown with several tiers of white lace that I picked up at the Salvation Army. I feel like if I popped a red hooded cloak over my ensemble, I would be channeling Little Red Riding Hood. Bring on the big, bad wolf, baby :)

The Snow Fairy

Snow, snow, snow!! We got at least 6 inches of it and the temp was -10 during the night. Not a usual occurrence in our temperate valley.

Tiger Baby insisted on going out for a bit, but she didn't last long. The deeper snow out in the yard came up to her kitty armpits! She left some cute little pawprints on the porch:

One of my vintage gnome ornaments got out for some skiing---and accordian playing?

The snow is lovely and powdery and sparkly---time to go snow shoeing again :)
How is the weather in your neck of the woods?

Holiday Decorating Pitfalls...

Tis the season to hang shiny tempting baubles from irresistible tree branches.  Do you find yourself having to decorate according to your pets? Do they eat tinsel?
